Getting around Uganda often means using more than one type of transport. A private taxi may suit an airport transfer, a boda boda can save time on a short city journey, and coaches or shared vehicles are more practical for longer routes.
The best choice depends on where you’re going, how much luggage you have and how fixed your plans are. It also helps to know how the fare will be calculated and which payment methods are available before you set off.
Choosing the Right Transport
Uganda has several ways to get around, and the most convenient option can change during the same trip. Luggage, traffic, distance and departure time all make a difference.
Private Taxi
A sensible choice for airport transfers, early departures and journeys with luggage. It also works well when you need several stops or want the driver to wait.
Confirm the destination, pickup point and full fare before leaving.
Ride-Hailing
Useful for everyday journeys in Kampala where app coverage is available. Booking through an app gives you the driver’s details and shows the payment options available for that ride.
Pickup points can be confusing in busy areas, so check that the driver has the right location.
Boda Boda
Often the quickest option for a short journey through city traffic. Boda bodas are less suitable when you have bulky luggage or need more space and protection from the weather.
Use a helmet and keep bags, phones and other loose belongings secure.
Bus or Minibus
A lower-cost option for common routes within the city and between towns. Buses and shared minibuses make more stops, and departure times may be less predictable than with a private vehicle.
Ask where the vehicle is going before boarding and confirm where you need to get off.
From Entebbe Airport
Entebbe International Airport is in Entebbe, while many arriving passengers continue to Kampala or another destination. The journey can take longer when traffic is heavy, so it’s better not to schedule a meeting or connection too close to your arrival time.
A transfer can be arranged through your accommodation or another trusted provider before the flight. Taxis are also available around the airport. Before entering the vehicle, confirm the exact destination, the full price and whether parking or luggage creates any additional charge.
Keep the address and phone number of your accommodation available offline. A written address is useful if your mobile connection isn’t working yet.

Getting Around Kampala
Kampala doesn’t have one transport option that suits every journey. Ride-hailing services and private taxis are convenient when you want a direct trip, while boda bodas can be quicker on short routes during busy periods.
Shared minibuses, usually called matatus, operate on common routes and are widely used for everyday travel. They cost less than a private ride, although the route and correct stopping point may not be obvious to a first-time visitor. Hotel staff, colleagues or local contacts can help you identify where to board.
Walking may work for short distances, but traffic, road crossings, heat and rain can make a route feel longer than it appears on a map. Check the surroundings before deciding to walk between two locations.
Boda Bodas
Boda bodas are part of everyday transport in Kampala and many other towns. They can be practical when traffic is slow or when the destination is difficult to reach directly by car.
They aren’t the right choice for every journey. Large bags, poor weather and unfamiliar roads can make another form of transport more comfortable.

Travelling Between Cities
Longer journeys need more planning than a short trip across Kampala. The route, departure point and number of stops can matter as much as the distance itself.
Coaches and Buses
Coaches and larger buses suit planned journeys between major cities and towns. They usually follow a fixed route and leave from a terminal or company office.
Check the departure location in advance and arrive early enough to find the correct vehicle. Ask whether the service runs directly or makes several stops.
Minibuses and Shared Taxis
Shared vehicles are useful for shorter intercity routes and trips with intermediate stops. They may leave once enough passengers have boarded rather than at an exact published time.
Confirm the destination before loading your bags, especially when several vehicles are using the same departure area.
Private Driver or Rental Car
A private vehicle is more practical when the itinerary includes several stops, luggage or destinations away from common public transport routes.
Before the journey, clarify what the price includes. Fuel, waiting time, additional mileage and the driver’s accommodation may need to be discussed for longer trips.
Paying for Transport
Cash remains important, but it isn’t the only way to pay. The available method depends on the vehicle, driver and booking service.
Cash
Cash is useful for taxis, boda bodas, matatus and many intercity journeys. Carry smaller Ugandan shilling notes, as drivers may not always have change for a large denomination.
For a journey without a meter or app fare, agree on the price before leaving. Confirm whether the amount is for one passenger or the whole vehicle.
Mobile Money
Some drivers and transport providers accept mobile money. Ask before the journey rather than assuming it will be available.
Check the recipient’s name and phone number carefully before confirming the transfer. Keep the transaction message until the payment has been acknowledged.
In-App or Card Payment
Ride-hailing apps show the payment methods available for your account and location. Review the selected method before requesting the ride, particularly when switching between cash and a cashless option.
Even when you plan to pay through an app, keeping some cash available gives you a backup if the connection fails or the selected method isn’t accepted.
Road Conditions and Travel Time
The travel time shown on a map is only a starting point. Kampala traffic, roadworks, weather, road surfaces and stops along the way can all change the length of a journey.
A route between towns may also include busy trading centres or slower sections of road. Leave some flexibility in the schedule rather than arranging important connections immediately after the expected arrival time.
For an early flight, medical appointment or fixed meeting, ask someone familiar with the route how much extra time is sensible.
